Teenagers take out street signs, fire hydrant and garage in Midvale crash

A 17-year-old is in custody and police are looking for a 14-year-old after a late-night crash wrecked a Midvale garage on Wednesday.

The two teenage boys were driving separate cars north on Monroe Street when they lost control near Columbia Street, according to Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen.

One of the vehicles hit a fire hydrant, and the other took out a couple of street signs, he said. The car the 14-year-old was driving crashed into a garage at the corner of Columbia and Monroe Street, damaging a car inside it and the front of the house, Hansen said.

The SUV the 17-year-old was driving rolled and hit a tree in the corner of the same yard, according to Hansen, who added both teens had been speeding before losing control.

Both teens ran, but officers found the older of the two and brought him into custody, he said. The 14-year-old has been identified, but not yet arrested.

Investigators are working to determine the teenagers’ relationship and what they were doing before they lost control and crashed.

“My understanding is neither car was stolen,” Hansen said. “I’m sure there are some real unhappy parents.
