17-year-old babysitter arrested after Utah toddler dies

A 17-year-old male babysitter was arrested Tuesday in West Valley City after a toddler lost consciousness while in his care and later died.

Police were called about noon Tuesday to a home near 4635 South and 2890 West and found the unconscious 21-month-old, identified as Jaycieion Sanchez, according to a news release.

Sanchez lost consciousness while with the babysitter and a sibling. The toddler had several visible injuries, which reportedly weren’t consistent with the babysitter’s explanation for what happened to the child, the release states.

After questioning the child’s mother and grandmother, police arrested the 17-year-old. He was booked into a juvenile detention center on an allegation of child abuse homicide.

Police are working with Child and Family Services on the case.
